To test the function, run the following code, which returns managers in all levels of employee 8 and generates the output shown in Table 9-15: SELECT empid, lvl FROM dbofn_managers(8, NULL) AS M;.

Above AppendixA you can see folders with various icons. The icon next to IISHelp and others indicates that these folders are set up as virtual directories. If you right-click on AppendixA and choose Properties from the shortcut menu, the Properties dialog box will appear, as shown in Figure A-2.

The CTE solution to returning ancestors is almost identical to the CTE solution returning a subtree. The minor difference is that here the recursive member treats the CTE as the child part of the join and the Employees table as the parent part, while in the subtree solution the roles were opposite. Run the code in Listing 9-12 to get the management chain of employee 8 using a CTE and generate the output shown in Table 9-16.

Notice how all the routes in this routing table include the tenant name that MVC passes as a parameter to the controller action methods.

To make this folder a virtual directory for IIS, click the Create button on the Directory tab. The settings on the tab will be modified as shown in Figure A-3.

To get only two levels of managers of employee 8 using the fn_managers function, run the following code, which generates the output shown in Table 9-17: SELECT empid, lvl FROM dbo.fn_managers(8, 2) AS M;

And to return only the second-level manager, simply add a filter in the outer query, returning employee ID 2: SELECT empid FROM dbo.fn_managers(8, 2) AS M WHERE lvl = 2;

You might want to clear the Read check box because in general, users shouldn t have to actually read files in the folder in the traditional sense. The exception, when Read must be set, is when you re allowing a default document that is, a document that will be called if only the virtual folder is specified. (More on default documents later in this appendix.) The Execute Permissions drop-down list enables you to specify the type of operations that can occur. You d set Execute Permissions to None only when you re running applications that have just HTML content, without any ASP.NET pages. Setting Execute Permissions to Scripts Only allows the application to execute scripts files with extensions such as .asp and .aspx. This is commonly the setting for your ASP.NET application directories. The last setting in the Execute Permissions drop-down list is Scripts And Executables, which allows the application to execute scripts and executable files. Note Visual Studio stores executable files in a subfolder named bin. You might think that the bin folder should have Execute Permissions set to Scripts And Executables because the DLLs used by ASP.NET pages are located there, but that s not the correct setting. In practice, when you call an .aspx page, you re not really directly calling any of the DLLs, so it makes sense, from the standpoint of IIS, that you don t need to have Execute permission in the bin folder. The Documents tab of the Properties dialog box is shown in Figure A-4.

To return two levels of managers of employee 8 with a CTE, simply add a filter on the child's level in the join condition of the recursive member as shown in Listing 9-13.
